Shawn is not new to the game of poker and his experiences include playing with Scotty Nguyen at the WSOP Circuit Event, winning of over US $4000 at the tournament at Casino Arizona a year ago, chatting with Daniel Negreanu, and discussing poker strategies with Greg Raymer in between playing satellites at last year’s WSOP.
Shawn enjoys playing Omaha Hi/Lo, but he has no doubts that his favorite game is No Limit Texas Hold ‘em as the game of skill that also reveals human nature. While most people he plays with regularly consider him a very aggressive player, he doesn’t like to bluff and always maintains his composure regardless of how the game goes. He enjoys the process of the game and doesn’t like it when it is too easy. That’s why he says he was ‘disappointed’ when he got his royal flush with just a Jack of Spades in his hand with the other four cards on the board.

“Boot camp” is term generally given to the military training that turns a kid, whose greatest challenge in life was getting past the Nightmare level on Halo 2, into a well oiled fighting machine. This type of training usually involves trading one’s locks for a tacky camouflage wardrobe and the type of food that even a wiener dog would turn their nose up at. After 8 to 10 weeks of running, sweating, and getting yelled at by somebody who works out their personal issues by intimidating teenagers, boot camp is over and the cadet is transformed from a pile of useless goo into something their parents can be proud of. If this is the sort of experience you are looking for, the WPT boot camp is definitely not the place to be.
The $100k buy in event featured the best players out there, such as Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Allen Cunningham, Guy Laliberte, Mike Baxter and David Peat. It was Baxter and Dwar who mixed it up before, and were destined to do it again in this particular hand.
All the players at Poker After Dark’s the Cash Game show admitted one thing: Durr was hard to read. In the $100k buy in event Phil Hellmuth, Allen Cunningham, Guy Laliberte, Mike Baxter, and David Peat were playing with a crafty player better known for his skill online as Durr, but his real name was Tom Dwan.
When Poker After Dark started their new season, they started to bring in some new blood as well. In the Cash Game episode, where players paid $100k to play, Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Allen Cunningham, Guy Laliberte, Mike Baxter, and David Peat were invited to play, with only Allen and Phil being old timers.
Watering down the talent pool has made it tough for the good players to shine. A world class player who has to face down 6500 opponents in a big tournament like the World Series of Poker Main Event is still a heavy underdog to make it to the final table. This is evidenced by the fact that it has been over five years since a big name pro has won the WSOP Main Event, and this year the November final table is basically a who’s who of the poker unknowns.
The all in bet has been a staple of big poker tournaments ever since the ESPN cameras became part of the sport’s reality. There are a number of reasons for this that can be explained from a tactical point of view, but the reality is that the all in bet is exciting: it’s the “Home Run” of the sport of poker, and makes for good viewing. Newer players have been watching this on television for years, and it has become an accepted part of the game. In older days these types of all or nothing gambits were less frequent.
So does a plumber have an unfair advantage when he uses a wrench to stop a stubborn leak? Well perhaps the leak thinks so, but in reality the tradesman is just using the proper tool of the trade to solve a problem. People might look a little sideways at the gentleman if he tried to stop the leak by swearing at it using cream cheese to stop the flow of water. In short, we expect people to use the tools available to them in order to be good at their jobs. Poker odds calculators are a relatively new wrinkle that has been added to the landscape of the online poker world.
Poker After Dark is a great show to watch to catch the pros in action. Typically they play a short handed winner take all No Limit Holdem tournament, but this particular week the theme was The Cash Game, where players paid $100k of their own cash to play.

I think that there is a natural transition with all poker players in how they go about learning certain games. I think that most players travel a very similar evolutionary process, the big difference seems to be the time delay for players to reach certain stages of advancement.

There’s been plenty of live action recently and seeing as there was no news round up last week we’ll begin with a brief recap of the events from the EPT Barcelona main event held from 10th to 14th September. The Spanish leg is always a popular starter to the EPT season and so it proved this year with a big turn out of 619 entrants for the €8,000 tournament.
No I am not to going to sit here and start spouting about what a great PLO player I am because that would be nothing short of bull. For years and years I side stepped it like you do an embarrassing ex when you are out with your mates. I don’t know what it was about the game but I could never properly figure it out and especially short handed. In fact years ago I would actually muck good PLO hands in dealer’s choice games simply because I couldn’t trust myself from the flop…

The World Series of Poker Europe was a period on any sentence that talks about how the Internet has changed the sport. Before today Annette “Annette_15″ Obrestad had the glorious distinction of being the best multi-table tournament player that the internet has to offer. In certain snobbish corners of the sport, the “poker elite” behave as if being the best tournament player in cyberspace is the equivalent of being the best race car driver in Hazzard County.
It was about two in the afternoon (British Time) when the evil was exorcised from the gaming floor at the World Series of Poker Europe. It was at this time that Phil Hellmuth was eliminated from competition. Usually when really bad things are killed off it takes an exploding death star or a farm house from Kansas falling on malevolent character to keep them down. In this case all it took was a short stacked Phil Hellmuth running into a very determined player.
Isabelle Mercier was eliminated with extreme prejudice when her pair of sixes failed to hold up against Tong G’s full house. During the previous hand Isabelle had the opportunity to eliminate Tony. She had him lined up for the kill with a pair of Queens when all he was holding was a suited A-K. During the hand her bravado got the best of her, and she took the opportunity to stick it to her flailing opponent.
The sixth day didn’t end with a bang - it was more like a flushing sound. Day 2A of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event concluded with a pair of last minute eliminations. Pat Scanlan ended Ian Munns tournament on the very last hand of the night while Gus Hansen took out Chris Bjorin in a hand that had all the excitement and energy of a Bob Newhart running the 40 yard dash.
On Monday Phil Hellmuth arrived in grand fashion atop a double decker bus. Phil is a legend, a bit of a knob, but a legend nonetheless. His entrance was as big as his presence in the sport. On Day 1B Doyle Brunson’s exit was far less grand and in direct contrast to man who surpassed him as the most decorated player in World Series of Poker history.
The first event at the World Series of Poker Europe was won by a guy from Germany. Today an Italian was crowned the champion of Event 2. The last time folks from these two nations dominated a European struggle, well… really bad things happened. Seeing as neither of these winners has dreams of world domination or a tasteless little mustache, we think the EU you are safe.
Jennifer Harman may not have won any bracelets at the WSOP Europe, but she has had the uncanny knack of somehow being wherever the action was happening. She was a runner up in the first event, and on Day 1A of the Main Event, took out Andy Bloch.

The US State of Kentucky had supported an effort to take control of 141 online gambling site URLs, including some of the more popular online poker sites like Full Tilt Poker and Pacific Poker, stating they encroach on the state’s own gambling businesses. Judge Thomas Wingate however defeated the move after allowing defense attorneys a continuance to build their case. The court ruling puts a temporary hold on any attempts to seize these URLs, which means the issue is not completely resolved but is a blow for the side of online poker players everywhere.

New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez recently introduced an act that, should it be made into law, would eventually allow online poker to be legalized, licensed and regulated, something the poker fans in the US have been hoping for. The Internet Skill Game Licensing and Control Act of 2008, official designation S. 3616, would specifically change the current US gambling code to allow for the licensing of “Internet skill game facilities.” This would allow for many card games that are played for money to be played online legally, with games like bridge joining poker.
