The US State of Kentucky had supported an effort to take control of 141 online gambling site URLs, including some of the more popular online poker sites like Full Tilt Poker and Pacific Poker, stating they encroach on the state’s own gambling businesses. Judge Thomas Wingate however defeated the move after allowing defense attorneys a continuance to build their case. The court ruling puts a temporary hold on any attempts to seize these URLs, which means the issue is not completely resolved but is a blow for the side of online poker players everywhere.

New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez recently introduced an act that, should it be made into law, would eventually allow online poker to be legalized, licensed and regulated, something the poker fans in the US have been hoping for. The Internet Skill Game Licensing and Control Act of 2008, official designation S. 3616, would specifically change the current US gambling code to allow for the licensing of “Internet skill game facilities.” This would allow for many card games that are played for money to be played online legally, with games like bridge joining poker.

Shawn is not new to the game of poker and his experiences include playing with Scotty Nguyen at the WSOP Circuit Event, winning of over US $4000 at the tournament at Casino Arizona a year ago, chatting with Daniel Negreanu, and discussing poker strategies with Greg Raymer in between playing satellites at last year’s WSOP.
Shawn enjoys playing Omaha Hi/Lo, but he has no doubts that his favorite game is No Limit Texas Hold ‘em as the game of skill that also reveals human nature. While most people he plays with regularly consider him a very aggressive player, he doesn’t like to bluff and always maintains his composure regardless of how the game goes. He enjoys the process of the game and doesn’t like it when it is too easy. That’s why he says he was ‘disappointed’ when he got his royal flush with just a Jack of Spades in his hand with the other four cards on the board.

I think that there is a natural transition with all poker players in how they go about learning certain games. I think that most players travel a very similar evolutionary process, the big difference seems to be the time delay for players to reach certain stages of advancement.
But one of the lessons that I learned (painfully) at the beginning of my time playing PLO was in the overall vulnerability of big pairs and especially when out of position and with deep stacks.

In tournaments, I play lots of hands. I’ll put my money in with all kinds of connected cards, especially when in position. I might limp, I might min-raise or raise a little more than the minimum, depending on the circumstances. I’m looking to keep my table off balance so they don’t know where I’m coming from.

Earlier this year, I cashed in the $2,000 Omaha Hi/Lo event at the World Series of Poker*. I enjoyed the tournament; it was great to spend some time playing a game other than hold ‘em. One thing that surprised me about the tournament, however, was that the quality of play was quite poor. Some players didn’t even know the very basics, like starting hand values. Too many poker players seem to drift into games having no idea what they need to be doing in order to win. Now to have a good idea as to where the money will be coming from (if at all) in a poker game then you need to know three things.

Some of them have said very kind things about how they enjoy reading about my travels, and that they’ve been wondering what’s been happening lately. Others are probably secretly thinking, (and hoping), that I’ve been doing my bollocks and I’ve been too miserable to write. I did actually hear recently that I lost £85,000 in the Vic in August and that I was doing a good job of losing all the Irish Open money.
Plane crashes, casino openings, worker layoffs, free concert tickets, new poker rooms, burglars target Hoyt’s house. Just another week in Las Vegas.
With the casinos as quiet as I have seen them since 9/11 the marketing managers have gone into overdrive to try and lure the locals out of their, soon to be foreclosed, homes, and back into the casinos.

While he didn’t finish the day at the very top of the stack, he was close enough: Kid Poker showed his stuff at the World Series of Poker Europe main event, sponsored by Betfair and currently running in London. Plenty of big names were still in the event, such as Phil Laak and Justin Smith, but other than the eventual chip leader John Juanda, non were doing as well as Daniel Negreanu. These and others totally 36 made the money in the tournament, and only the top 24 made it through to the next day of the WSOPE.

The FNS network has joined forces with the WPT to launch a new poker show, a series based on a subscription poker site. Two men who have been arrested in connection with the assault and robbery perpetrated on an American poker player have appeared in the Melbourne courts recently. The victim, Jason Potter, is a 22 year old poker pro who won $30k playing at the Aussie Millions, and then was knocked over the head in the early morning hours and had the money taken.
